Why are the images in the set, Silver and Gold, a combination of JPG, PNG and GIF formats?

The JPG format was used for images which have clean, sharp edges, and with no intricate details inside the graphic – this is the format most frequently used by graphics sites because it preserves most of the image quality while keeping the file fairly small.

The problem with JPG format though, is the pesky white background that has to be removed every time it needs to be layered with other graphics. When the image is very detailed with intricate “holes” inside the graphic, it is more practical to have a transparent background.

There are two formats which preserves background transparency: GIF and PNG.

I used GIF for intricate images with clean, sharp edges (like the snowflakes) –the file produced is still fairly small. One thing that is not so good about the GIF format is that its resolution (picture quality) is lower than JPG or PNG.However, if the image is large, then later on, resized to make it smaller, the quality is not affected.

Among the three, PNG produces the largest file – that is because it preserves background transparency and image quality. It is most ideal to work with graphics in PNG format, but it can be a nightmare to download, especially if you have a dial-up connection. However, only PNG files can preserve the metallic glow of gold, or the faint shadow of a ribbon, so some files had to be in PNG format.

Do you offer membership to a graphics club like other websites? Do you have a schedule as to when there are new releases?

Unlike other graphics sites, Gem’s Cottage does not offer membership. There is also no set schedule as to when the next set of graphics will be released. This is because I’m a wife and a mother first, and I only make the graphics during my spare time.

There was this nice project with a free graphic in your site before. How come I don’t see it anymore?

Free projects, templates and designs will always be offered, and these will keep changing to make room for new ones. Grab the free projects, templates and downloads when you can – because once it’s gone, it’s gone! Project CDs will be offered soon though, so watch out for these new products!

Why don’t you have a message board?

I would love to have one, but I probably won’t be able to maintain it because of my “busy-ness”. I do stop by and check the message boards (where I have met a lot of you wonderful people!) when time permits. However, if you have questions, comments, suggestions or concerns regarding Gem’s Cottage, please feel free to contact us. We read every single e-mail from our customers and we try to respond right away – we don’t use an automatic response generator!

How do you make your graphics?

Most of my graphics are created using Photoshop, and the rest are made with watercolors. I don’t have any formal training in art - I have a degree in Mathematics instead, and I used to be a Math teacher then a computer programmer, LOL! However, I have always loved drawing, my math notebooks are filled with sketches of people and flowers.
